The store is looking pretty lovely if we do say so ourselves. And we’ve been having a great time lately. We feel pretty lucky. This week, our wildest dream came true — a gourmet lunch counter opened right across the street.
Our free Sunday classes have been wildly successful. This Sunday, Flora will be give a talk on proteas at 10:30am. More info below.
Easy vertical garden
Finally, we can offer an easy, affordable, do-it-yourself vertical garden for indoors or out. You’ve been asking for it and we found it! Come and see the one we installed here at the store, and we can give you all the help you need to install your very own (or, if you like, we can do it for you). This modular system comes as small as just two-feet wide, and can be hung together to cover an entire wall. The pockets are made of breathable felt made from recycled plastic bottles. This planting was designed by our own Jim Kumiega.
The sunny side of our installation features succulents, bromeliads, rhipsalis, palms and many more.

Succeed with Proteas and Their Kin
Sunday, August 16, 2009, 10:30am
Flora Grubb herself will talk about some of her favorite plants — those in the protea family, like leucadendrons, grevilleas, banksias, and proteas. These plants solve some tough garden problems, thriving in pots on windy decks, ignored even by hungry deer, tolerant of really dry conditions. They are perfect companions for succulents, and provide long-lasting color in the garden in all seasons. Learn how to take advantage of our mild Mediterranean climate and stingy water budget to deploy these stunning creatures in your garden.
Leucadendron salignum 'Blush'
Some of our favorites from the protea family are the leucadendrons.
There are so many we love, but this new selection called 'Blush' is even
prettier that all the rest. And, it blooms four times a year for us!
So many amazing banksias! Looking for an evergreen tree with fascinating foliage and spectacular flowers that can tolerate wind and needs little water? Hello, Banksia.
Protea 'Pink Ice'
Sure, proteas are mind-blowing when you see them in a vase, but aren’t they even more so when you see them growing right out of the ground, atop their silky foliage, right here in your Bay Area garden?
As at all of our workshops, a discount will be available that day on the plant group or products we’re discussing. Please come – and bring questions!
A gourmet lunch counter opens right across the street
Weekday lunches will never be the same here on Jerrold Avenue. I'm instantly enamored with our new neighbor, Rondelli Deli (open Monday through Friday, 11:30am to 2:30pm), directly across the street.
Renowned chef, Alain Rondelli, is offering super-gourmet take-out lunches for the public at his immaculate catering facility — at a very reasonable price. The menu changes weekly, with a luscious lamb sandwich and a rich salad-in-pita on the list this week, plus homemade drinks like mint iced tea and an ethereal meringue dessert. Weekdays, come grab lunch and lounge in the garden on Jerrold Avenue with us!
Greyson Danger Grubb Smith is almost one year old
Last but not least, because you all keep asking for it, here is a picture of my boy Greyson, the prize of Flora Grubb Gardens. I know, shockingly cute.
We do hope to see you soon.
