For Your Valentines

There's been a lot of love floating on the uncommonly balmy breezes here at the nursery lately. Isn't it wonderful to share something you love with someone you love?

We've got a number of lovable, sharable, beautiful nature-related things for you, in time for Valentine's Day. And they're not just for your one-and-only sweetie. Sometimes the most poignant valentine is the one given to a friend.

Lovebirds

We adore these carved-wood bird sculptures. Each one carries a tillandsia air plant in its beak or feet: altogether a lovely gift to your valentine, easy to admire, and easy to care for.

Most romantic is this pair of birds, one carrying a love note, the other an air plant. We can't help but see them as lovebirds. What a charming way to say, "I love you!"

Footed Aerium – Adorable!

Our mini worlds enclosed in glass – our Terrariums and Aeriums – have been amazingly popular. They inspire the imagination, offering an infinite series of perspectives onto the hand-gathered and composed mosses and air plants inside.

Our Footed Aerium (limited supply) is an adorable microcosm, a nice round complement to our Cube Aerium.

A View Into the Heart

These wood plaques combine literal and abstract dimensions in a singular work of art. They've been grooved into portraits of hearts inspired by natural anatomy. Each unique plaque's simple, modern lines conjure the elegance of Victorian science and the visceral intensity of real bodies. We're so lucky that our talented artist friends are willing to share their creations with us. This one is a perfect show of heart for your sophisticated beloved.

Shhh! The Secret of Midwinter Blooms

The subtle garden gifts of San Francisco's winter surprise us every year, no matter how well we track the seasonal cycles around here. Time to gloat, folks: It's one of the best times of year for reveling in flowers, and for planting. Take a look at some of our favorites in the nursery right now.

Beauteous Boronia

The arrival this month of Boronia megastigma means its scent, reminiscent of an expensive perfume, pervades the air here at the nursery. This boronia's delicate resinous foliage and flowers in brown and chartreuse reward close inspection. It thrives planted in a pot or in nutrient-poor, well-drained soil and a sunny exposure.

This Native Is Huge in London

A favorite exotic in British gardens, our native silktassel bush (Garrya elliptica) decorates California and Oregon's coastal hills this time of year. Its lovely strands of gray-purple flowers hang on a small evergreen tree that matures at eight to 12 feet tall. We have small plants that would love to get their roots into your garden's rain-moistened soil. Local wildlife will love you for bringing a familiar food and shelter source into their neighborhood, too.

We will be closed on February 22nd for inventory.
Don't forget our sale! February 12th – 20th.
